Lanterns, and conservatories worth sitting in.
Roof lanterns over extensions, glazed links between buildings, and conservatory roofs — repaired, replaced in glass, or swapped for a solid insulated roof when the old one leaks in winter and cooks you in summer.

Glass roofs and lanterns.
Two jobs come under this heading. One is putting a lantern into a flat roof over an extension, which is the difference between a back room and a room anybody actually wants to sit in. The other is dealing with a conservatory roof that has stopped doing its job — and on this coast, most of them eventually have.
A lantern is only as good as the upstand it sits on. We build the kerb, dress the flat roof covering up and over it, and set the lantern on top so the waterproofing runs underneath the frame rather than relying on a bead of silicone round the outside of it. Done that way it does not leak, and nobody needs to look at it again.
Conservatories we will be straight with you about. Polycarbonate that has gone milky and drums in the rain can be replaced with glass, which is quieter and clearer and keeps the room bright. But if the room is unusable half the year, a solid insulated roof with a couple of rooflights let into it turns it into part of the house — and it costs less than most people expect.
What we do
- Roof lanterns supplied and fitted into new or existing flat roofs
- Kerbs and upstands built, with the waterproofing run under the frame
- Leaking lanterns stripped back and re-detailed properly
- Old polycarbonate conservatory roofs replaced in glass
- Solid insulated conservatory roofs, with rooflights let in
- Glazed links and canopies between buildings
- Self-cleaning and solar-control glass where it earns its keep
- Existing frames kept where they are sound, rather than replaced for the sake of it

Worth knowing.
- Why lanterns leak
- Nearly always the upstand, not the glass. If the flat roof covering stops at the kerb and silicone is asked to do the rest, it is a question of when rather than whether.
- Glass or solid?
- Glass if you want the light and the room is already comfortable. Solid if it is too cold in January and too hot in July, which round here describes most conservatories.
- Building regulations
- Putting a solid roof on a conservatory is usually notifiable work. We deal with that rather than leaving it sitting with you.
- Self-cleaning glass
- Worth the money on a roof you cannot reach. On a low single-storey lantern you can wipe down yourself, it is not.

The rest of roof windows and glazing.
These sit alongside this one under roof windows and glazing. If yours turns out to be one of those instead, the price is worked out the same way.
Velux window installation
New openings cut, trimmed and fitted with the flashing kit that matches the covering. Velux and equivalent, including conservation units.
Roof window repair
Leaking, misted, dripping or seized roof windows. Usually the flashing rather than the window, and usually cheaper than you were expecting.
The other things we do.
Most jobs turn out to be more than one of these at once. If you're not sure which you need, describe what you can see and we'll work it out.
Slating and tiling
Nearly every pitched roof on this coast is slate. Stripping them, re-covering them, matching them to the terrace next door and putting stone back on the ones that had it.
Flat roofs
Fibreglass, EPDM rubber and torch-on felt for extensions, dormers, garages and porches. Laid to falls so water actually leaves the roof.
Repairs and leaks
Slipped slates, cracked tiles, failed valleys, damp patches on the ceiling. We find where the water is getting in before we quote for anything bigger.
Chimneys and leadwork
Repointing, flaunching, chimney removal and rebuilds, plus lead flashings, valleys and soakers cut and dressed on site.
Gutters, fascias and soffits
The cheapest part of the house to look after and the one most often left. Clearing, repairing and replacing gutters, downpipes, fascias and soffits.
Storm damage
Emergency call-outs, tarpaulins and temporary covers when the weather comes in off the Irish Sea. We work with insurers and can supply photos and reports.
