Roofing in Keswick.

We are based in Keswick as well as on the coast, which matters here more than it would in most towns. If your roof opens up at two in the morning you want somebody who is already this side of the fells, not somebody setting off from the A595 — and we are. The phone is answered around the clock and the response to a Keswick roof is a Keswick response.

Keswick and the country round it is Lakeland slate — the green and grey stone quarried out of these fells, at Honister and elsewhere. It is nothing like the Welsh slate of the coast. It is thicker, considerably heavier, and it comes in random widths and thicknesses rather than uniform sizes. That means the roof has to be set out rather than simply covered: the largest, heaviest slates at the eaves, getting smaller in graded courses up to the ridge, each course sized and laid so the whole thing looks right and sheds water. Done properly it is one of the finest roofs in Britain. Done by someone treating it like a box of tiles, it looks wrong and it leaks.

The other thing to know is the planning. The town is inside the Lake District National Park and much of it is a conservation area, with plenty of listed buildings. What that means for you is that matching what is already there is not merely good manners, it is generally a requirement. Concrete tile is not going on a Keswick roof. Rooflights on visible slopes will want to be conservation pattern and may need consent.

A lot of property here is also let — holiday cottages, B&Bs, guest houses — where the real constraint is the calendar rather than the roof. If the job has to fit between bookings, tell us that when you ring and we will plan it round them.

What the weather does here.

Keswick is among the wettest inhabited places in England. It sits in a bowl between the fells with Skiddaw above it and Derwentwater below, and the rain that comes off high ground arrives in quantity. There is no salt, but there is more water than anywhere else we work.

Water in that volume punishes any detail that is not right. Valleys, gutters, hoppers and downpipes are all working harder here, and moss establishes itself readily on north-facing slopes and holds water against the slate.

The wind, when it comes off the fells, is gusty and comes from odd directions rather than steadily from the west. Heavy Lakeland slate copes with that better than a light covering would — provided it is fixed and set out as it should be.

Give us a call. Looking at it costs you nothing.

We come out, get on the roof, and tell you what's actually wrong — not what's easiest to sell you. The price we quote is the price you pay, in writing, before anyone lifts a slate. A standard re-roof is normally done inside two days.

Jobs round here.

Our own photographs, off our own jobs. The van you can see is the one that turns up.

A roof stripped to the rafters and re-covered with blue breather membrane and new treated battens, the old stone slates still in place along the eaves and fresh lead dressed into the chimney.
Two roofers in branded jackets leaning into the back of the Riverside Roofing tipper on a street of pebbledashed semis, with fells behind the houses.
Three roofers stripping a semi-detached roof on a clear day, with scaffolding up and the company van parked at the kerb.
A finished rubber flat roof on a rear extension, laid in one sheet with a black trim along the parapet, the old slate roof of the house behind it.
A roofer cutting away rotten boards on a flat roof and laying fresh OSB decking over the joists, with new sheets stacked on the van in the yard below.
A finished rubber flat roof seen from above, laid in one unbroken sheet to the edge trim, with the garden and sheds below.
Two roofers rolling a sheet of EPDM rubber out flat across new boards on an extension roof, with the street and houses opposite behind them.
A red sandstone terrace being re-roofed behind scaffolding, with the Riverside Roofing tipper van in front.
A slate roof stripped back at the eaves, showing perished felt and rotten, crumbling timbers underneath the bottom courses.
Scaffolding around a pale blue rendered house with a newly finished tiled roof.
A finished hipped roof in new slate with lead-dressed hips and ridge, the old stone chimney stack standing above it against a clear sky.
Two roofers standing on a newly laid rubber flat roof, refitting slates on the pitched roof where it meets the extension.
Slating part way up a roof, the new courses laid to the chimney and blue breather membrane still showing on the side yet to be covered.
The company van loaded with pallets of new tiles outside a house with the roof stripped back.
The Riverside Roofing tipper parked outside a brick semi with a tower scaffold up against the gable and a roofer working at the eaves.

What Keswick says.

Rated 4.7 out of 5 from 16 reviews on the Keswick profile.

New slate roof — , 30 November 2020

“Top service! Came out after some storm damage to my roof by storm Eowyn. They were there within the hour from me making contact and carried out a temp fix and make the roof watertight whilst i logged a claim with my insurers. Once my insurance claim was authorised they came straight back out to do the permanent repairs and even waited for the insurance payout to hit my bank before I paid them. All done in good faith and nothing was too much trouble. Would definitely recommend.”
