Chimneys and leadwork.
A chimney takes more weather than anything else on the house. It stands proud of the roof, it is exposed on four sides, and the mortar in it is usually the oldest on the building. When damp appears on a bedroom chimney breast, the stack is nearly always where it started.
We repoint, renew the flaunching around the pots, fit or replace cowls, and rebuild the top few courses where the brick has spalled. Where the fire has gone for good we take the stack down and roof over the hole so there is nothing left to maintain.
Lead we cut and dress on the roof — code 4 and code 5 to the right detail, welted, clipped and pointed into the joint. Cement fillets and flashing tape are what we get called back to replace, so we do not use them.
What we do to a stack
- Repointing in a mortar that suits the brick or stone
- New flaunching around the pots
- Pots and cowls replaced, or capped and vented if the flue is disused
- Spalled and frost-damaged courses rebuilt
- Full stack removal and the roof closed over it
- Lead flashings, soakers, saddles and back gutters
- Lead valleys and parapet gutters renewed
- Cement fillets cut out and replaced properly in lead

Worth knowing.
- Code 4 and code 5
- Heavier gauge lead for valleys and larger sheets so it does not split as it moves. Thinner lead in the wrong place is a leak waiting to happen.
- Cement fillets
- A cheap substitute for a flashing that cracks within a couple of winters. Where we find one, we take it out.
- Taking a stack down
- We remove it and make the roof watertight. The chimney breast inside can then be dealt with by a builder, or left alone.
- Capping a disused flue
- A vented cap keeps the rain out while letting the flue breathe, so the brickwork does not end up damp from the inside.

The other things we do.
Most jobs turn out to be more than one of these at once. If you're not sure which you need, describe what you can see and we'll work it out.
Slating and tiling
Nearly every pitched roof on this coast is slate. Stripping them, re-covering them, matching them to the terrace next door and putting stone back on the ones that had it.
Flat roofs
Fibreglass, EPDM rubber and torch-on felt for extensions, dormers, garages and porches. Laid to falls so water actually leaves the roof.
Repairs and leaks
Slipped slates, cracked tiles, failed valleys, damp patches on the ceiling. We find where the water is getting in before we quote for anything bigger.
Gutters, fascias and soffits
The cheapest part of the house to look after and the one most often left. Clearing, repairing and replacing gutters, downpipes, fascias and soffits.
Storm damage
Emergency call-outs, tarpaulins and temporary covers when the weather comes in off the Irish Sea. We work with insurers and can supply photos and reports.
