Roofing in Beckermet.

Beckermet is really an old village with a modern one attached. The historic core is sandstone cottages and a pair of very old churches, low and thick-walled, with slate roofs at a steep pitch and the small, awkward details that come with buildings that have been altered over centuries — a bit of lead here, a valley there, a lean-to that was added when someone's grandfather was young.

Behind that sits a good deal of newer housing, much of it built when Sellafield was drawing workers into the area. Those houses are a different job entirely: shallower pitches, concrete interlocking tiles, factory-made trusses, and roofs that are usually structurally fine but reaching the age where the felt underneath has gone brittle and the ridge bedding has let go.

Then there are the farms. Beckermet is surrounded by working agricultural land, and barns and outbuildings are real roofing work — big spans, sheeting, roof lights that have gone milky, and buildings that are a long way from anywhere you can stand a scaffold. We do that work, and we price it honestly, including the access.

It is a quarter of an hour from the yard, so it is a routine run for us rather than a trip.

What the weather does here.

Beckermet is a few miles back from the coast, so it gets the wind and the driving rain without the full salt load that St Bees and Seascale live with. Enough to matter on an exposed gable, not enough to eat fixings the way the seafront does.

The more common problem inland is water sitting where it should be running. Trees, open country and a lot of rain mean gutters fill, valleys silt up and moss gets a hold on north-facing slopes. On the older cottages that is what eventually finds its way through.

Guttering — Google, 22 November 2019

“Top service! Came out after some storm damage to my roof by storm Eowyn. They were there within the hour from me making contact and carried out a temp fix and make the roof watertight whilst i logged a claim with my insurers. Once my insurance claim was authorised they came straight back out to do the permanent repairs and even waited for the insurance payout to hit my bank before I paid them. All done in good faith and nothing was too much trouble. Would definitely recommend.”
