Roofing in Distington.
Distington sits on the A595 between Whitehaven and Workington, which means we drive through it most working days. That is worth saying plainly, because it makes small jobs here viable in a way they are not somewhere we would have to make a special trip. A single slipped slate is a reasonable thing to ring us about in Distington.
The village is a mix. There are older terraces along the main road and around Common End, of the same era and pattern as the mining villages inland, and there is a good deal of later estate housing built around them. The terraces want slate work; the estate houses want gutters, fascias, soffits and the occasional flat roof over an extension.
What Distington has that the sheltered villages do not is exposure. It is up on open ground with very little between it and the coast, so wind is a bigger factor here than the map suggests. Ridge tiles and verges take a beating.
It is also close enough that storm work here gets the same response as our own town — the phone is answered around the clock and it is a quarter of an hour away.

What the weather does here.
The village is higher and more open than it looks on a map, with fields between it and the sea rather than shelter. Wind is the main event: it arrives with force even if it has dropped most of its salt on the way.
That shows up as ridge and verge damage rather than general wear. A roof here can be in good order across the middle and still lose a ridge tile off the end, because the end is what the wind can get hold of.

Guttering — Google, 22 November 2019
“Top service! Came out after some storm damage to my roof by storm Eowyn. They were there within the hour from me making contact and carried out a temp fix and make the roof watertight whilst i logged a claim with my insurers. Once my insurance claim was authorised they came straight back out to do the permanent repairs and even waited for the insurance payout to hit my bank before I paid them. All done in good faith and nothing was too much trouble. Would definitely recommend.”
