Millom: we come, but we plan it rather than promise it.

Built in one go for the Hodbarrow iron mines, so the roofs are all the same age. An hour round the coast, and we would rather say that than pretend otherwise. A family firm of 20 years. Free quotes, 24 hour call-outs.

Roofing in Millom.

Let us be straight about the geography first, because it matters more here than anywhere else on this list. Millom is not far from us as the crow flies — the Duddon estuary is in the way. By road it is the best part of an hour down the A595. We do work in Millom, and we are glad to, but it is planned work rather than a same-hour call-out, and anyone who tells you different is either not coming from West Cumbria or not telling you the truth.

What that means in practice: we will come and look and quote for nothing, same as anywhere. But we will give you a date rather than a vague morning, and we will usually want to do the job in one continuous run rather than dipping in and out. For a full re-roof that is no different from anywhere else. For a single slipped slate, it is worth asking us and a Millom-based roofer both, and we will not be offended.

The town itself is a good place to roof. It was built more or less from nothing in the 1860s and 70s to house the men working the Hodbarrow iron ore mines, which were among the richest in the country, and it was built quickly and uniformly. Street after street of terraces to a single pattern, roofed at one time in Welsh slate. Like Cleator Moor and Frizington, they are now all at the same stage — the slate is frequently fine and the nails have gone.

It sits on the Duddon estuary too, which means salt and wind off the water. The coastal specification applies: proper fixings, and ridges fixed mechanically rather than trusted to mortar.

What the weather does here.

Millom sits on the Duddon estuary with open water to the south and west. It gets salt-laden wind, and the low-lying ground around the estuary means driving rain arrives with very little to slow it down.

The effect on the terraces is the familiar coastal one: fixings corrode, mortar bedding under ridges softens and lets go, and cast iron rainwater goods rust from the seaward side. Nothing exotic — just a reason to specify a re-roof here properly rather than to a mainland price.

Guttering — Google, 22 November 2019

“Top service! Came out after some storm damage to my roof by storm Eowyn. They were there within the hour from me making contact and carried out a temp fix and make the roof watertight whilst i logged a claim with my insurers. Once my insurance claim was authorised they came straight back out to do the permanent repairs and even waited for the insurance payout to hit my bank before I paid them. All done in good faith and nothing was too much trouble. Would definitely recommend.”
