A proper look, with photographs from up there.
Getting up and looking is the only way to know what a roof needs. It costs you nothing when you want the work priced, and there is a written report if you need one for a sale, a mortgage or an insurer.
No call-out charge, and the phone is answered 24 hours.

Roof inspections.
Almost nothing about a roof can be judged from the pavement. A covering that looks sound from the garden can be nail-sick right through; a roof that looks tired can have fifteen years left in it. So we get up and look at the flashings, the valleys, the ridge and the fixings, then go into the loft and look at the other side of the same roof.
You get photographs of whatever we find, and those matter more than our opinion of it. You can see the cracked flaunching or the perished felt at the eaves for yourself and decide what you want done about it, rather than taking a stranger's word for it over the phone.
If you are having work priced, the inspection is free and there is no call-out charge. If what you want is a written condition report — for a house purchase, a landlord's file or a claim — that is a job in its own right and we charge for it. We will tell you which one you are asking for before we set off.
What we look at
- The covering: slipped, cracked, missing and nail-sick slates or tiles
- Ridge and hip bedding, and whether any of it is mechanically fixed
- Valleys, flashings, soakers and any cement fillets doing a lead's job
- Chimney stacks, flaunching, pots and cowls
- Eaves felt, eaves trays and the rafter feet behind the fascia
- Gutters, downpipes and where they actually discharge
- The loft: daylight, staining, damp timbers and insulation
- Photographs of everything found, and what it takes to put right

Worth knowing.
- Free, or a paid report?
- Free if you want a price for work. A written condition report for a sale, a mortgage or a landlord's file is a paid job in its own right. We will say which before we come out.
- Buying a house
- A homebuyer's survey usually says further investigation is recommended and stops there. This is that further investigation, done by someone who will be standing on it.
- Ladders, not drones
- A camera from twenty feet up can tell you a slate is cracked. It cannot tell you the batten behind it has gone soft. We go up and put a hand on it.
- How often
- Every few years on a sound roof, and after any real gale. More than that is money you do not need to spend.

The rest of roof maintenance.
These sit alongside this one under roof maintenance. If yours turns out to be one of those instead, the price is worked out the same way.
The other things we do.
Most jobs turn out to be more than one of these at once. If you're not sure which you need, describe what you can see and we'll work it out.
Slating and tiling
Nearly every pitched roof on this coast is slate. Stripping them, re-covering them, matching them to the terrace next door and putting stone back on the ones that had it.
Flat roofs
Fibreglass, EPDM rubber and torch-on felt for extensions, dormers, garages and porches. Laid to falls so water actually leaves the roof.
Repairs and leaks
Slipped slates, cracked tiles, failed valleys, damp patches on the ceiling. We find where the water is getting in before we quote for anything bigger.
Chimneys and leadwork
Repointing, flaunching, chimney removal and rebuilds, plus lead flashings, valleys and soakers cut and dressed on site.
Gutters, fascias and soffits
The cheapest part of the house to look after and the one most often left. Clearing, repairing and replacing gutters, downpipes, fascias and soffits.
Storm damage
Emergency call-outs, tarpaulins and temporary covers when the weather comes in off the Irish Sea. We work with insurers and can supply photos and reports.
