Roofing in Maryport.
Maryport is one of the more interesting towns on this coast to work in. It was laid out from scratch in the 1750s by Humphrey Senhouse as a planned harbour town, on a grid, and there is a Roman fort on the hill above it. The result is streets of uniform Georgian and early Victorian terraces stepping down towards the harbour, much of it now a conservation area.
Uniform terraces on a slope mean roofs that step, and stepped roofs mean lead. Every change in level between one house and the next is a junction, and on a town-wide grid there are a great many of them. Add tall shared chimney stacks and parapet details and you have a place where the leadwork matters more than the slating does.
The exposure is the other half of the story. Maryport looks out over the Solway Firth with Scotland on the far side, and it gets wind and salt off the water without much shelter. Fixings corrode, ridge bedding fails, and cast iron gutters and brackets rust from the seaward side. The specification we use on the coast — stainless or copper nails, mechanically fixed ridges, lead rather than cement — applies here as much as it does at St Bees.
It is about half an hour from the yard, so Maryport work is planned rather than same-hour. We are honest about that: for a genuine emergency we will come, but for a routine job we will give you a day rather than a vague promise.

What the weather does here.
Maryport faces the Solway Firth, open to the west and north-west, and takes salt-laden wind straight off the water. It is a different exposure from the Irish Sea coast further south — less relentless, but with some ferocious northerlies that get at elevations a west-facing town never has to worry about.
Salt does the slow damage: nails, mortar bedding and ironwork. Wind does the sudden damage: ridge tiles, verges and anything already loose. On the stepped terraces the wind finds the raised gable of the higher house first, which is why those junctions are where we usually start looking.

“Top service! Came out after some storm damage to my roof by storm Eowyn. They were there within the hour from me making contact and carried out a temp fix and make the roof watertight whilst i logged a claim with my insurers. Once my insurance claim was authorised they came straight back out to do the permanent repairs and even waited for the insurance payout to hit my bank before I paid them. All done in good faith and nothing was too much trouble. Would definitely recommend.”
