Services/Gutters, fascias and soffits/

New rainwater goods, hung to hold their fall.

A gutter that sags is a gutter that blocks again next autumn. Most of getting this right is bracket centres, fall and what the fascia behind it is nailed to — none of which you can see from the ground, which is why so much of it is done badly.

No call-out charge, and the phone is answered 24 hours.

Gutter installation.

We take the old run off first and look at what is behind it. On a house where the gutter has been overflowing for years the fascia is usually soft at the joints and the rafter ends can be soft with it. Boarding straight over that is the quick way to do the job and the reason somebody will be doing it again in eight years, so anything rotten gets cut back to sound timber and spliced before a new board goes on.

Then it is brackets at proper centres — around 800mm on uPVC, closer either side of a joint — set to a fall of roughly three millimetres to the metre so the run actually empties towards the outlet. uPVC in half-round or ogee to match the street, or aluminium where the run is long, exposed or facing the sea and you would rather not do this again.

Downpipes are the part that gets forgotten. They want clipping properly and they want to discharge into something — a back-inlet gully or a proper connection, not onto a paving slab next to the wall, which is how you end up with damp at skirting level and a survey report about it when you sell.

What the job covers

  • Old guttering, fascia and soffit stripped and taken away
  • Rafter ends checked, and rotten timber cut out and spliced
  • New fascia and soffit board, or the existing timber made good
  • Brackets at proper centres, set to a working fall
  • uPVC in half-round or ogee, or seamless aluminium
  • Cast iron replaced like for like where the house calls for it
  • 10mm continuous over-fascia ventilation into the loft
  • Downpipes clipped and connected into the gully or drain

Worth knowing.

uPVC or aluminium
uPVC is the sensible default and does the job for decades. Aluminium is worth the extra on long, exposed or seaward-facing runs, and it does not go brittle.
Ventilation
New fascia is the moment to get air into the eaves. A loft that cannot breathe grows condensation on the underside of the felt and drips on the insulation.
Matching the terrace
Black half-round on a Victorian street, ogee on most post-war estates. We will tell you what the rest of the row has before you choose a colour.
How long it takes
Front and back of a standard semi in a day, off ladders or a tower. Add time if the fascia turns out to be carrying rot.
