Three layers, not the one people picture.
Felt has a poor reputation earned entirely by the wrong product. A single layer of shed felt nailed down does fail in five years. A properly built-up three-layer torch-on roof is a different thing and lasts twenty.

Felt roofing.
What we lay is a built-up system: a first layer fixed down to the deck, an intermediate layer bonded over it, and a mineral-finished cap sheet bonded over that. All three are polyester-reinforced and modified with SBS, which is the additive that lets bitumen flex in cold weather instead of cracking. Three separate skins between the weather and your decking, each one lapped so the joints never line up.
The first layer is fixed rather than torched straight onto timber. That matters twice over — it keeps a naked flame off a dry deck, and it lets the covering move independently of the boards underneath, which is what stops the whole thing splitting along a joint in the first hard frost. Anyone torching layer one directly onto ply is saving twenty minutes at your expense.
It goes on extensions, garages, dormers, porches and outbuildings, and it is the sensible answer where the roof is out of sight and the budget matters more than the last ten years of service life. Where you will walk on it or look at it, fibreglass is usually the better spend.
What the job covers
- Old covering stripped back to the deck
- Soft or delaminated decking replaced
- Firrings cut in where the roof has no fall
- First layer mechanically fixed, never torched onto bare timber
- Intermediate layer and mineral cap sheet fully bonded
- Upstands, drips and edge trims formed in the same system
- Outlets, gutters and abutments dressed in properly
- An hour's fire watch after the torch goes off, before we leave

Worth knowing.
- How long it lasts
- Twenty years and up on a garage. The cheap single-layer stuff sold as felt lasts about five, which is where the reputation comes from.
- Felt or fibreglass?
- Felt if it is out of sight and you will not walk on it. Fibreglass if you will, or if it is a dormer you look at from a bedroom window.
- Hot works
- It is a naked flame on your property, so we work to a fire-watch routine and stay on after the last torch goes off rather than packing up straight away.
- Patching an old felt roof
- Rarely worth it once the cap sheet has lost its mineral and gone brittle. A patch on a perished roof lifts at the edge within a year.

The other things we do.
Most jobs turn out to be more than one of these at once. If you're not sure which you need, describe what you can see and we'll work it out.
Slating and tiling
Nearly every pitched roof on this coast is slate. Stripping them, re-covering them, matching them to the terrace next door and putting stone back on the ones that had it.
Flat roofs
Fibreglass, EPDM rubber and torch-on felt for extensions, dormers, garages and porches. Laid to falls so water actually leaves the roof.
Repairs and leaks
Slipped slates, cracked tiles, failed valleys, damp patches on the ceiling. We find where the water is getting in before we quote for anything bigger.
Chimneys and leadwork
Repointing, flaunching, chimney removal and rebuilds, plus lead flashings, valleys and soakers cut and dressed on site.
Gutters, fascias and soffits
The cheapest part of the house to look after and the one most often left. Clearing, repairing and replacing gutters, downpipes, fascias and soffits.
Storm damage
Emergency call-outs, tarpaulins and temporary covers when the weather comes in off the Irish Sea. We work with insurers and can supply photos and reports.
